Daniel asks…

What airlines to Thailand allow empty portable oxygen tanks.?

Just curious for my 83 year old father.

EloiseG answers:

Think I’ll go down to my local ups or fedex drop off center and send it – they will help you with the paper work and send it for you – then you could have it waiting for you when you get there

Lizzie asks…

where can i find portable oxygen tanks for the home?

home medical equipment like oxygen tanks and portable tanks

EloiseG answers:

If you look in the phone book, you will find many suppliers who provide oxygen in portable tanks. I would look under “Medical Supplies.”

Best wishes.

Chris asks…

why don’t miners have portable oxygen tanks located whever they work?

if divers can breathe under water, miners should never be without oxygen while underground.

EloiseG answers:

Uh – they do. They have some form of auxiliary breathing systems for emergency use, i forget exactly what they are called. Its not really a oxygen tank, but a emergency system of some form. But nothing is perfect and nothing lasts forever. Considering when a mine caves in it usually takes several days to get to the person, there really isn’t any form of oxygen tank that would last that long anyways.

Sandra asks…

What is the proper way to store a portable oxygen tank? Is it safe to keep it next to a photo-copy machine?

There is a portable oxygen tank stored directly next to a photo-copy machine in a room with many computers and laser printers at my work. I almost want to refuse to work further until it is moved. Should I and my colleagues be concerned for our safety?

EloiseG answers:

This would be a far from ideal location to store oxygen canisters. I have training in the storage and useof oxygen cylinders used for medical purposes but the principles should be the same.

Compressed gas is potentially very dangerous and should be kept away from sources of heat and dust. Should the canister be knocked over and damaged this can be dangerous too. Your employer should be aware that if there is a fire the canister would be very likely to explode.
Gas cylinders should always be stored in a secure area. I am wondering why there is a need for oxygen to be kept in an office area anyway (unless there is an employee that requires it at all times).

It is highly unlikely that the cylinder would cause an immediate risk to your health and safety unless it is damaged but i would strongly advise that you request your employer to move it as this is not an appropriate or safe place to store such equipment.
